From Buckeyes to Banyon Trees |
I'm a 19 year Film student from hamilton ohio, who moved down to Orlando, Florida, to attend Full Sail University. I'm doing my best to understand this whole "Film" game. I'm learning more about the industry and life each day. I'm loving Orlando, and I'm sure my posts will show you that. |
For once I think i might actually be more excited about seeing the Lighting in Skyfall. Than I am to see a James Bond movie. These are beautiful shots, Deakins is incredibly talented.

Pre Text:
For this post to make sense, I think i might need to give you a little introduction. I’m currently in my last month of Film School. As you can guess Film school is filled with countless Egomaniacs and Druggies. Today we watched a documentary called “Easy Riders, Raging bulls.” The following is a quote, and my feelings toward said quote.
(Actual Post)
“Steven Spielberg didn’t drink, he didn’t do drugs, and he always checked his ego.” This is the only quote I remember from the documentary we watched today in class. Sitting in a room of Wannabe Filmmakers, and Egotistical Douchebags, this quote was uttered. I sat in the dark room, and laughed quietly to myself.
If you asked anyone in my class who there favorite directors are you would pretty much get a standard list, a couple would change depending on the person asked, but there is one person who is on almost everyone’s list. Spielberg, With good reason. He’s the most commercially successful director. He made the first blockbuster for goodness sakes. Everyone in Film School either Idolizes him, or at least is smart enough to have respect for him.
Now after my fellow classmates have heard this I wonder if any of them will take anything from that quote. Will they learn that they are not anywhere near the level of Spielberg, yet he goes to set, and talks to Producers with his ego at his feet. If Spielberg your Idol, does that don’t you think that might be something you want to imitate? If the best visual storyteller, doesn’t go off and get wasted every night, and doesn’t show up to production meeting high. I don’t think you are good enough at your craft to do it High/Drunk either…
I know this post is stupid, since you don’t know the people in my class, and might just come off as me saying that i’m better than everyone in the class (which I’m not trying to say.).
What I’m trying to say is… if you want to make freaking movies, maybe you should not be a stoned egotistical douche bag.
I wish people realized just how incredibly possible it is to make a FIlm. It’s hard work…Don’t get me wrong, but It’s so attainable it kills me. I wish I had a good script. Not just a good script a Great script. One that i could latch myself on, and follow it through the whole journey. It’s possible. Once I had something that I was “that” motivated, and dedicated to make, I would move mountains to see it come to fruition.
I’m stuck with these people (myself included) who write for what is “Doable” what is possible in “Our realm” SCREW THAT! Write a good story. Once you do that We will MAKE IT POSSIBLE. We all try to write to be “different” and unique. What we don’t realize is that everyone is trying to do that! When you try that hard to be different you end up sounding just like everyone else.
A great script can be anything. It could be a love story between a man and a stapler! It doesn’t matter, as long as it isn’t boring you are set! Everyone thinks it has to have X number of explosions or it has to follow this structure….it doesn’t. Write a compelling..interesting…or even relatable story. Just write. So the technical people like me can help it come to life.
I haven’t been on Tumblr in months and I ended up writing an out of place rant about Filmmaking. Sorry for all those who read this. Probably not all that interesting.
